MissAdventures in Paradise

About an hour ago, after a perfect morning of driving through Baja California and stopping (and shopping) in tiny beach towns, I arrived at my next destination. The writer’s conference I’m attending provided the option of post-conference trips, and since I’m down here I decided to go for it.

I already loved Pescadero driving into it, as it’s one of the biggest agricultural areas of Baja. There are fields and fields of basil and cucumbers and lots of other crops I didn’t get a close enough look at to be sure of. I felt curious and nostalgic for my own farm back home.

Then we turned off the main road onto a bumpy dirt one, an unlikely path to fancy boutique hotel. I prepared myself to find something less than luxurious.

Then I arrived. And was led to my hotel by the nicest receptionist I’ve ever met. Her name is Carla. She said, “I’ll get your bags while you go get a free welcome drink at the bar.”

I think I love her.

But as it was, I’ve had more than enough tequila in the past few days and since I loved her and all, I decided I wanted to get my bags with her and pester her with questions. She didn’t mind (or else she’s just the best receptionist ever and didn’t show it).

She brought me here.

And now this amazing relaxing experience is being tainted by the wifi’s inability to upload my pictures to my blog. So I supposed I will describe the rest. With a bit of bitterness. That will get erased as I describe this setting to you (the complimentary chocolate bars won’t hurt either).

The room is two levels, one with the beds and bathroom and another “living room.” The living room extends out onto the exterior porch, so that, essentially the whole place is actually outside. You can close these giant, wood framed sliding glass doors if you prefer, but every single “room” is built so that no one else can see in (though everyone can still see the ocean from their bed!). I am currently sitting in the indoor half of the living room because it’s a little breezy outside.

On the coffee table in front of me is a coconut wood pitcher with distilled water, and outside our door is a huge urn filled with more for us to refill. There are lemons and limes, and surrounding it all in a beautiful wood tray are chocolate bars and bags of cheetos (a funny touch, but actually fits my personality perfectly).

On the vanity is a beautiful Mexican box. When you open it has matches, binoculars, a flashlight, cards…and a magic 8 ball. Everything you need for a good weekend away.

On the exterior porch is a beautiful glass table with a candle lantern and two huge white wicker chaise lounges. Fronting our porch is a planter box filled with gorgeous purple flowers.

From our deck we can see a small palm grove leading out to the Pacific Ocean (about 200 feet away). We can also see the lush white sand beach and the daybeds set up on the ocean with gorgeous canopies. We’ve been encouraged to take a drink down and lie on the daybeds to watch the sunset. Yes please.

Then there is the bathroom. The sinks are gorgeous basins with several faucets coming into them, and there are tons of plush white towels and even big plush robes for us to wear. There are local soaps and bath salts made in Cabo San Lucas that smell amazing. The bath/shower is inset into the floor so that the tub is like a pool all of tiny green tiles. It’s about half the size of a hot tub. I just finished spending an hour reading a pirate book, overlooking the ocean, with a chocolate bar, in a bathtub. Yes please.

To top it all off, there is a giant chicken scupture in our room. Okay, I’m not certain it’s a chicken, but because I recently became a chicken farmer, I’m going to say it is.

That would have been a lot better in pictures. Earlier I walked the whole room, snapping pictures and  writing captions in my head. They were good.

I also just heard that Sunset recently reviewed this place. Not surprised.

If you need me before Saturday, I’ll be checking in, but otherwise I’ll be lounging in a daybed by the ocean, taking lucious baths, or possibly borrowing a bike to bike around the little farms and try to get some farmers to talk to me.

The First Day of Traveling Again – Random Musings

One summer when I was a wildlife biologist I decided I wanted to spend a year in Mexico. I don’t know where the dream came from, only that suddenly I was fixated on when, how and where I would do it. I would learn Spanish. I would live with a family in a compound with babies and grandmas and macho men and gossiping women. I would learn to make rice and beans and tortillas and less cliche foods. It would somehow be lush and green and dry and sweaty and everything I imagined Mexico to be.

I don’t think I’ll ever [...]

Idiot(a) in Mexico

Last night, on the three-hour bus ride from Cabo to La Paz, I was wondering if I’ve matured. If perhaps travelling was different for me now. Perhaps I won’t have the missadventures to write about that I used to. It felt strange, but I felt peaceful about it. Yes, I’ve matured. I don’t get myself into the ridiculous scraps that I used to.

Within 20 minutes of stepping off the bus and onto the beach, I had ordered a margarita, then requested, “On the rockas. With salta.”

Seriously. That came out of my mouth. I have no idea why, but luckily caught [...]

A Note About My Absence

Dear Readers,

You may have noticed I’ve been absent for a while – my apologies. As I recently wrote, I moved to the family farm in late March, and internet access has been a huge issue. I get online about once a week.

Because of the troubles I have been debating whether to close miss.adventures entirely, but I am not quite ready to do that yet. Stay tuned, and I promise to be back and updating someday soon.

Speaking of which – does anyone have an affordable rural internet option? We’ve about exhausted our options trying Satellite, microwave, DSL…cable doesn’t reach us out [...]
